Travertine is a limestone formed by the precipitation of lime from water supersaturated with calcium carbonate (lime) from hot springs. Twigs, leaves and other material that falls into this water and later digests cause the characteristic irregular pores of this material. An important place for travertine is the town of Tivoli east of Rome.

Travertine is formed when the CO2 content in the water decreases (e.g. due to a rise in temperature) and lime deposits occur. This can be expressed with the following chemical equation:
