This unique type of stone only comes from Zimbabwe and was formed about 2000 million years ago. It can be found in many places in the country, especially in the so-called "Great Dike". The stone is already about 1 to 2 metres below the surface. The serpentine pieces are torn off through slits and holes.
Serpentine is a collective term for a large group of stone varieties. The best known of these are the black / brown serpentine, the opal serpentine and the springstone. Almost every stone has a rusty brown skin. This is also known as the weathering or oxidation layer and is quite soft and brittle. It can be removed or used to create an image.
