Blue limestone, bluestone, bluestone, coal limestone or petit granite is a limestone with a more or less pronounced blue-grey colour, characterised by the presence of many crinoid residues. Crinoids are tiny skeletons of water lilies that lived on the bottom of the shallow sea about 300 million years ago. When they died, their limestone skeleton remained on the bottom and together with the calcite deposit that forged everything together, the blue limestone layer was formed over hundreds of years. The stone is thus a bond of crinoids through microcrystalline calcite. The colour is determined by very finely distributed carbon.

Bluestone contains +/- 96% calcite (CaCO3), the dominant mineral in most limestones. The rock contains a high proportion of fossilised fauna. These are sometimes visible on the surface.

If the fossils are filled and completely connected to the mass of the stone, they pose no danger. They usually increase the value of the material by their appearance. The most common fossils besides water lilies are:
    • Shells of brachiopods or "crustaceans".
    • Colonies of polyps or "bees' nests".
    • Colonies of Syringopora.
    • Sponges of the Asteractinella species or "wolf's foot".
